This 5 day RYA Competent Crew is a hands on practical sailing course for beginner yacht sailors and those who would like to become an active member of the crew rather than just a passenger. In this course you will stay aboard the yacht so that you really live and understand the complete yachting experience.


RYA Competent Crew will teach you the basic principles of sailing, as well as personal safety. The course includes the following:

  • Helmsmanship
  • Sail Handling
  • Rope Work
  • Essential Safety Procedures
  • Rules of the Road
  • Metrology
  • Man Over Board
  • Manners and Customs

The Course: On this course you will either head south from Barcelona along the Costa Dorada to stunning ports such as Sitges or Tarragona, or north to the rugged Costa Brava with its secluded beaches, coves and hidden villages towards Tossa de Mar and Cadaqués. During this course you will be mooring up each night in different ports to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, superb apres sailing and delicious cuisine that Spain has to offer. If you want a fantastic sailing experience with warm weather, perfect sailing conditions, wonderful coastline, ports, harbours and Catalan quaint coastal villages then this is the course for you!

Course Objective: The skills acquired in this course will enable you to become a valuable crew member. You will be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout and be able to assist in all the daily routines.

What Next: Once you have completed your RYA Competent Crew you can go onto to complete your RYA Dayskipper. A Dayskipper can charter a yacht and enjoy sailing independently. Chartering a yacht is a perfect opportunity to get away from the crowded beaches, discover isolated coves only accessible by the sea and build on your skippering experience. Barcelona Watersports charter out their yachts in Port Vell.

Possible Itinerary: 

Clients flying in from different locations are welcome to stay onboard the night before so they are ready for the next day. Our yacht is located in the most idealic location in Barcelona, within minutes walking distance Barri Gothic, Barceloneta and its beaches. Marina location includes excellent facilities with WIFI, showers, gym, bar and restaurant.

09:00 Safety briefing and introduction to deck gear, ropes, rigging and various parts of the yacht. Engine start controls and rigging/slipping of mooring lines and fenders. Slip mooring and motor down out of the harbour giving everyone a chance to steer the yacht under power and gaze at the amazing Super Yachts. Short sail to an anchorage or mooring buoy giving everyone the chance to raise sails and control them using the sheets.
13:00 Lunch at a mooring buoy or anchorage. Discuss the use of liferafts. Practice the basic points of sail with each person having the opportunity to helm or control sheets. Practice putting in and shaking out reefs with main sail and Genoa. Sail to overnight destination practising what a crew member should do in the event of a Man Overboard situation.
18:30 Enter a new harbour up the coast.
19:00 Debrief on day’s events whilst relaxing in you new sheltered harbour
20:00 Head into local town for an evening meal

08:00 Showers at marina facilities, breakfast, clean up and get weather forecast.
10:00 Prepare the yacht for sea and undertake a passage to an anchorage for lunch. On route each crew member will experience helming the yacht on different points of sail. Learn how to tie the basic 6 knots used by sailors and when they are used. Prepare to enter anchorage. Learn how to prepare the anchor and foredeck in anticipation of arrival.
14:00 Lunch at anchor. Set sail for evening destination learning the basic collision regulations on route.
17:30 Arrive at a new harbour at the start of the stunning Costa Brava. Debrief the day’s events.

09:00 Showers at marina facilities, breakfast, clean up and get weather forecast.
10:30 Carry out some more manoeuvring under power using pontoons and mooring buoys whilst waiting for the afternoon breeze to kick in.
13:00 Lunch at nearby mooring buoy.
14:00 Depart mooring buoy for short sail to evening destination. Practice tacking, gybing and general sail trim on route. Practice steering a compass course and maintaining a lookout.
1800 Arrive at new bay and secure the boat at anchor or to a mooring boy under the fantasic castle and old town of Tossa De Mar. Inflate dinghy and practice some paddling skills to get to shore for some local delights.
18:30 Dinghy rowing drills followed by debrief on the days events.
19:00 Paddle ashore for evening out.

09:00 Showers ashore, breakfast, clean up and get weather forecast.
10:00 Plan trip back to Barcelona, prepare boat. Prepare lunch to have on route.
11:30 Set sail for lunch time destination and practice Man Overboard on route. Practice taking sights with the hand bearing compass and keeping a look out.
13:30 Lunch whilst sailing.
20:00 Night entry into Barcelona giving you a great experience.
21:00 Enjoy a well deserved night out in Barcelona after a long day of sailing.

10:00 Breakfast and plan a day sail from Barcelona.
10:30 Practice time to polish off the Motor and Sailing manoeuvres.
14:00 Arrive back, lunch and tidy up. Clean up yacht followed by debrief and issue of certificates.
16:00 Depart.
